David Richardson’s piece The Landfill Next Door breaks down many aspects of landfill management including litter prevention, compaction, odor and more. A theme of the piece was compliance with stringent regulations in a shifting industry. As part of the ongoing industry shifts, we are seeing a change in leachate treatment costs, with rising disposal costs and shrinking outlets. Casey notes the changes which are contributing to a very real and expensive dilemma for landfills, but also suggests that Heartland can help. “The idea is to reduce the amount of leachate and be sure to have a long-term solution so landfill operators are not caught by surprise with a constraint on their disposal options,” says Casey Cammann. MSW’s 2023 Supplement also shines light on a success story with the piece Landfill Establishes Cost and Disposal Certainty with On-Site Leachate Evaporation written by Heartland’s Casey Cammann and Hillsborough County’s Larry Ruiz. Cut-off from its long-term local disposal partner, the Hillsborough landfill installed a Low Momentum—High Turbulence (LM-HT®) Concentrator to treat 50,000 GPD of leachate. Utilizing existing otherwise flared LFG for as a renewable thermal energy source for operations, the closed-loop process greatly reduced expensive offsite trucking from 13 to 5 trucks a day, and reduced overall treatment costs by over 20%. Another critical part of the project was automated controls and monitoring through the Heartland Heartbeat™ system, offering real-time data accessibility and predictive maintenance. The automated reporting assists with operational compliance, giving the landfill a real-time comprehensive view of plant performance and enabling operational success.
